How to Deseed a Pomegranate

Technique · 5 minutes

Stop avoiding pomegranates — this trick changes everything. These little jewels are bursting with flavor, color, and nutrients, and deseeding them is so much easier than you think. Less than five minutes if you do it right.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe pomegranate
  • A wooden spoon
  • A bowl

Method

  1. Cut off the crown of the pomegranate.
  2. Score along the white pith, following the natural sections.
  3. Split the pomegranate open along the scored lines.
  4. Hold each half cut-side down over a bowl and tap firmly with a wooden spoon — the seeds will fall right out.
  5. You’ll end up with a bowl of ruby jewels, ready to eat or use in your next recipe. They keep in the fridge for a few days — if they last that long.
